Rutland Secondary School Forestry Program Tours
In March, the Rutland forestry class went on a woodlands field trip above Okanagan Lake. Mike Jobke (BCTS) and Bruce Thompson (Tolko) taught the students about harvesting operations and reforestation. On May 1st, they travelled to Armstrong to visit PRT’s nursery and Tolko’s sawmill and plywood operations.
High School Career Fair Events
In March, Heather Rice (MoFR) was invited to attend a career fair in Kelowna and spoke with about 50 students about the opportunities available to Forest Technicians.
In April, Jerome Jang (MOFR) and Kalon Nahachewsky attended the Penticton Rotary Career Fair and spoke with over 100 students about career opportunities in forestry. Students were provided with information on post-secondary school programming and careers in forestry.
In May, the Penticton Fire Protection Crew attended an event which focussed on careers in the Emergency Services Field. High school students from Penticton and Summerland received a lesson on fire protection and some had the opportunity to test out some of the equipment.
Penticton Tree Planting Day
About 30 students from Ecole Entre Lacs Francophone School in Penticton planted seedlings supplied by Weyerhaeuser along Penticton Creek. Thanks to Phil Rippin and his staff from the City of Penticton Parks & Recreation Division, the event was a huge success.
FortisBC Wild Festival for Youth
On June 6th, approximately 300 elementary school students attended the FortisBC Wild Festival at Okanagan College in Kelowna, where a number of community groups sponsored stations related to environmental topics. At the Okanagan/Columbia forest education station, students learned about the Mountain Pine Beetle and received a seedling, donated by Tolko Industries.
